Iranians around the world celebrate Khamenei's death

On the night of March 1, Iranians across the country and beyond took to the streets in droves to celebrate the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This is reported by The New York Times and other American media.

In video calls with The New York Times, three Tehran residents showed large groups of people dancing, cheering and shouting "Hurray!" Drivers honked their horns, fireworks exploded in the sky, and Persian dance music played. From balconies and windows, many chanted: “Freedom, freedom.”

A 53-year-old resident of Tehran said that when she heard the news, she screamed and started jumping, and then ran out into the street with her husband - they hugged, laughed and danced with neighbors.

According to the publication, Khamenei's supporters wrote on social networks that it was difficult for them to see what was happening, but there were not many of them on the streets.

Celebrations also took place outside Iran: in Madrid, London, Berlin, Armenia and the USA.

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 in US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

On December 28, 2025, protests began in Iran due to the collapse of the economy and inflation. They quickly grew into nationwide protests with direct slogans against the Islamic regime and Ali Khamenei personally. The protests were harshly suppressed. According to various sources, from several thousand to several tens of thousands of people were killed. Opponents of the regime said that they hoped for US military intervention.
