British authorities were unable to detain sanctioned tankers from the Russian “shadow fleet” for fear that this would violate international law. The Telegraph newspaper writes about this. Earlier, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the military could detain ships in the country's territorial waters that are on British sanctions lists.

As the newspaper clarifies, British Prosecutor General Richard Hermer explained that special forces soldiers and employees of the National Crime Agency (NCA) can board the ships.

However, this did not help in the case of the passage the day before through the English Channel of two tankers appearing on the British sanctions lists - Universal ( IMO : 9384306) and Enigma (IMO: 9333412) - accompanied by the frigate of the Russian Black Sea Fleet "Admiral Grigorovich".
