An oil slick with an area of ​​more than 100 square kilometers is drifting towards the coast

Over the past two days, more than 200 birds, dead and stained with oil products, have been found on the coast of Anapa. At the same time, a large oil slick was detected in the Black Sea, which is drifting towards the shore.

Scale of pollution

According to the operational headquarters of the Krasnodar Territory, the spot was discovered approximately 11 km from the coast. It has already been treated with biosorbent and booms have been installed, but it has not been possible to completely stop the spread.

According to satellite data analyzed by ecologists, the area of ​​pollution reaches about 117 square meters. km, and the length is up to 43 km. The spot has already reached the coast of the Anapa Spit.
The volume of spilled oil products is estimated at 300–350 tons.

Possible reasons

The regional operational headquarters believes that the pollution could have arisen as a result of recent drone attacks on ships in the Black and Azov Seas.

Earlier it was reported about damage to ships and the sinking of a dry cargo ship off the coast of the Kherson region. According to the authorities, the leak of petroleum products could have occurred as a result of these incidents.

At the same time, environmentalists admit that the source of the spill could be one of the tankers in the Kerch Strait area. However, it is not yet possible to accurately identify the vessel - there were dozens of ships in the area.

Krasnodar region is still eliminating pollution from 2024 and preparing for the beach season

In December 2024, two tankers sank in the Kerch Strait area, and about four thousand tons of fuel oil spilled into the sea.

Despite statements by the authorities that more than 90% of the pollution has already been eliminated and the beaches are planned to open by June 1, new emissions are recorded regularly.

Rosprirodnadzor previously noted that it is impossible to completely collect fuel oil, since it continues to flow into the water from sunken ships. Environmentalists estimate that it may take more than three years to completely clean up the region.

Authorities in the Krasnodar region continue to prepare for the tourist season, but a new wave of pollution could jeopardize these plans.
