The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has requested the transfer of Dark Eagle hypersonic missiles to the Middle East. Bloomberg writes about this with reference to sources.
CENTCOM justified this request by arguing that Tehran had moved its launch sites deeper into the country. They are now located beyond the range of the missiles currently in service with the army in the region.
The Dark Eagle missiles themselves are not yet in service with the United States. If the request is approved, this will be the first time the US has deployed hypersonic missiles, the agency notes. A final decision on this issue, however, has not yet been made.
Washington currently has eight such missiles, and they are at the testing stage. Their range is approximately 2.7 thousand km. The development of these weapons is behind schedule: Russia and China already have similar systems, as Bloomberg notes.
The request from CENTCOM comes amid a truce between the United States and Iran that has lasted since early April. Late last week, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said Washington had made “some progress” in negotiations with Iran in recent days.
