The US removed from Venezuela all the enriched uranium produced at the RV-1 research reactor

The United States has removed all enriched uranium produced at the RV-1 research reactor in Venezuela, the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) said . The statement noted that the outdated nuclear facility was decommissioned in record time.

The RV-1 reactor, where nuclear research was carried out, ceased operation in 1991, but stockpiles of enriched uranium were still stored there. The team, which included American and Venezuelan specialists, as well as IAEA experts, extracted 13.5 kg of uranium over six weeks and packed it into a container for spent nuclear fuel.

The container was transported 160 km overland to the port, where it was loaded onto a special vessel provided by the British company Nuclear Transport Solutions. In early May, the cargo arrived in the United States and was transported to the Savannah River Nuclear Complex (South Carolina) for processing and reuse.

“The safe removal of all enriched uranium from Venezuela sends another signal to the world to rebuild and renew Venezuela. Thanks to the decisive leadership of President Trump, teams on the ground completed in a few months what would normally have taken years,” said NNSA Commissioner Brandon Williams.
