Anthropic, the creator of the AI assistant Claude, has confidentially filed for an initial public offering with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), ahead of its main competitor, OpenAI, Bloomberg writes . It is noted that both AI startups are fighting to be the first to enter the public market and gain an advantage in the race for computing power.
Experts believe that whoever goes public first will have an immediate advantage in attracting capital to build data centers, purchase chips and hire specialists. “Whoever comes out first sets the tone, and whoever comes second risks looking like they're catching up,” warns Renaissance Capital strategist Matthew Kennedy. However, the latter’s position also has advantages: OpenAI will be able to observe the reaction of institutional investors to Anthropic’s financial statements before announcing its own offering price.
Anthropic's value in its latest funding round reached $965 billion, surpassing OpenAI's $852 billion valuation for the first time. The company's annual revenue growth rate was $47 billion, five times higher than last December. If its public debut is successful, Anthropic will rank among the world's largest companies and could become the second-largest IPO in history behind SpaceX.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has publicly downplayed the IPO race. He said:
“I think there is a race for the best technology and the best business, but going public is a funding event and I don’t think we’re focused on the timing of it.”
Earlier it was reported that Anthropic agreed with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to use the computing power of the Colossus 1 data center in Memphis - more than 300 megawatts and over 220 thousand Nvidia GPUs. The deal is beneficial to both parties: Anthropic solves the problem of lack of resources amid the growing popularity of the Claude Code tool, and SpaceX receives a large client on the eve of its own initial public offering.
