The Orenburg resident’s case was sent to court under Art. 205.2 and 354.1 CC

According to the regional department of the FSB, he posted pro-Ukrainian messages on the messenger.

On June 3, 2026, it became known that the investigative department of the Federal Security Service of Russia for the Orenburg Region had completed the investigation of a criminal case against a resident of the regional center under Part 2 of Art. 205.2 (public justification of terrorism on the Internet) and Part 4 of Art. 354.1 of the Criminal Code (humiliation of the honor and dignity of a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, committed on the Internet). The case was sent to the Central District Military Court for consideration on the merits.

According to investigators, the accused supported the armed forces of Ukraine and posted texts and images justifying terrorist activities in one of the public messenger channels. In addition, his publications contained expressions that humiliated the honor and dignity of World War II veterans.

We do not know the exact content of the publications and do not assess the persecution of the Orenburg resident under Art. 205.2 CC. However, regarding the application of Part 4 of Art. 354.1 of the Criminal Code, we recall that, in our opinion, in cases where the reputation of specific veterans is affected, controversial issues can preferably be resolved through civil proceedings. If we are talking about insulting the memory of unspecified defenders of the Fatherland, which is also included in this norm, we believe that criminal prosecution for acts defined through such abstract categories does not meet international legal standards in the field of human rights. Thus, the statements of an Orenburg resident about veterans probably should not have become a reason for criminal prosecution - at least if they were not accompanied by calls for violence, hatred and discrimination.
