1848 Proclamation of the Second Republic in France
170 years ago, on February 25, 1848, the Provisional Government, formed after the abdication of King Louis Philippe, proclaimed the restoration of a republican form of government in France. The time from February 25, 1848 to December 2, 1851, when Louis Bonaparte staged a coup d'etat and soon proclaimed himself Emperor Napoleon III, is called the period of the Second Republic.
