Globally, the number of women being jailed for dissent is rising.
Globally, more women are being jailed for dissent and activism, human rights organization Pen America said in an annual report. Between 2019 and 2023, the number of incarcerated female writers increased from 35 to 51, according to Pen America. The largest number of such cases has been recorded in Iran. The report's authors emphasize that Iranian women who oppose forced hijab wearing are particularly at risk.
