Former Deputy Head of the Mejlis, Sentenced to a Long Term by a Russian Court, Has Been Able to Return to Ukraine
Ukraine was able to return ten of its citizens who were held in prison in Russia, including the former deputy head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Nariman Dzhelal. This was reported on his Telegram channel by Volodymyr Zelensky. In September 2022, a Russian court in annexed Crimea sentenced Dzhelal to 17 years in prison for sabotage on a local gas pipeline. Two other defendants in the case, brothers Asan and Aziz Akhtemov, were sentenced to 15 and 13 years in prison, respectively.
