On August 30, 2006, the trial of Vitaly Tanakov, accused under Art. 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (incitement of national and religious hatred). V. Tanakov, who calls himself the "high priest" of the pagan religion of the Mari people, one of the activists of the "Mari" opposition to the President of the Republic, published the brochure "The Priest Speaks", for the distribution of which he was held accountable.

On August 31, REN-TV channel aired a special edition of the "Hour of Judgment" program "Ordinary Chauvinism", which combined three civil cases (considered by Justice of the Peace Pavel Astakhov) related to nationally and religiously motivated insults and violence. Recall that the program considers real cases with the consent of the participants in the process. The first case was connected with bringing a 13-year-old schoolgirl from Kyrgyzstan to suicide.

On the night of August 29-30, 2006 in the city of Kondopoga (Karelia) in the restaurant "Chaika" there was a mass brawl between the natives of Russia and Chechnya. As a result of the fight, 3 people were killed (according to other sources - 4), another 9 were injured.
