The Ministry of Internal Affairs reports an increase in extremist crimes
On January 21, 2008, Alexander Chekalin, First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, reported a three-fold increase in the number of extremist crimes in Russia over the past four years. "In 2004, 130 such crimes were committed, in 2005 - 152, in 2006 - 263, in 2007 - 356 ," A. Chekalin said. He also clarified that "mostly these are crimes committed on national or religious grounds .
