On July 25, 2008, the head of the Investigative Committee under the Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation, Alexander Bastrykin, speaking at the board of the department's capital department, said that the number of crimes of an extremist nature committed in Moscow has increased almost sixfold. According to A. Bastrykin, in the first half of 2008, 73 extremist crimes were registered in Moscow, while during the same period in 2007 there were 13 such crimes.
