Airborne Forces Day in Russia
On August 2, 2011, the celebration of Airborne Forces Day was traditionally marked by racist incidents involving drunken paratroopers. In Astrakhan there was a mass fight between paratroopers and local residents. The paratroopers were heading to the cemetery to honor the memory of their fallen comrades. According to eyewitnesses, several people were drunk, behaved aggressively and provoked a conflict with visitors and traders of the Big Isady market, many of whom were from the Caucasus.

In Novocherkassk, the deputy head of the city administration is accused of inciting hatred
On August 20, 2011, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Rostov Region reported the initiation of a criminal case under paragraph “b” of Part 2 of Art. 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (incitement of hatred or enmity, as well as humiliation of human dignity using one’s official position) against the deputy head of the Novocherkassk city administration, Vladislav Zhuravlev.
