Boris Stern In March of this year, the Bicep2 experiment team announced the registration of relict gravitational waves. This event was devoted to an article in the Triv-Feature of March 25 [1]. In that article, we approached the statement with great caution and hinted that it was early to drink champagne. The reason for caution-agenturical data from qualified people who are directly involved in the same problem in other experiments.

Many external signs of males - horns, teeth, jaws - arose as a result of sexual selection, that is, the struggle for the female. Males show each other weapons, compare who is cooler (rarely reaches a fight), and victory provides access to the body, and often not one. It is believed that the female tournaments make it easier for the female choice. Entering an alliance with the winner, she is guaranteed to acquire a healthy, strong partner with good genes that he will transmit to the offspring.

Alexander Polnarev On the eighth of March 2014, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yakov Borisovich Zeldovich turned 100. “Trinity option is science” has already dedicated the number to him (dated April 22), but the topic was far from exhausted. The other day, the Zeldovich-100 conference was held at the Space Research Institute, which his students, already living in the West, came to.

Danila Raskov, author of the book "Economic Institutes of the Old Believers" The Christian creed, to put it mildly, does not encourage economic initiative. Both the Old and the New Testament condemn the usury; Christ drives out from the Temple of merchants and calls for the heavenly, not earthly treasures. Let us finally recall the famous saying about the camel and the needle.

Karl Sagan The name of the American astronomer and exobiologist Karl Sagan (1934-1996) is known to all fans of science. His studies of the planets have always been in the forefront, they are highly appreciated by professionals, but besides this, he made extremely a lot to popularize science in all conceivable forms of this genre. He is completely deservedly considered an outstanding enlightener of the twentieth century.

Natalia Demina Now I know what a book from the long list of the Enlightener most of all I liked the prize co -organizer Alexander Gavrilov. And this was not a book about Dandy Olga Weinstein or sentimental introduction into mycology of Yuri Dyakov, but “The Life of Wonderful Zhukov”, prepared for ten years by three enthusiasts by Sergey Izhevsky, Andrei Lobanov and Alexander Sosnin. “This book is striking in both the quality of training and the flame of people involved in science.

Announcement of the issue And again about gravitational waves Boris Stern continues his story about the mysteries of the Universe - page 3 Professor Gukova and her science New Dissernet investigation: this time a professor at Volgograd State University has been mercilessly exposed - page 4 A long way to the reader Report by Natalia Demina on the announcement of the longlist for the Enlightener literary prize - page 5 Old Believer ethics and the spirit of capitalism Economist Danila Raskov told

Dear edition When the ill -wishers say that we are not at all brilliant with science and criticize our state policy, I recall a lot, which is doing the country's leadership for science, but the first thing is our wonderful scientific flagship, a breakthrough national laboratory of a new type - the Kurchatov Institute. And his great leader, scientist, popularizer and organizer of science - Mikhail Valentinovich Kovalchuk.

It is not a triumphal procession from Crimea to Moscow that one can free Russia, but by creating at least on a piece of Russian land of such a order and such living conditions that would pull all the thoughts and strength of the people groaning under the red yoke. P.N. Wrangel Oleg Gubarev At the end of the civil war, the White Army of Baron Wrangel dug in Crimea. The peninsula, adapted for defense by nature itself, was extremely difficult to take.

Andrey Tsaturyan Representatives of the free network community "Dissernet" have repeatedly stated that the subject of their investigations is not fake dissertations themselves, but the reputation of their "authors" and their "assistants" - scientific leaders, opponents and leaders of the dissertation councils.

SPRAGUE-DAWLYA-the most painful rat in the world ... ("Wikipedia") With Seralini (Gilles-Eric Seralini) you will not get bored . A scandalously known French researcher, claiming that genetically modified corn can lead to diseases and death of rats, again with us. All the same rats of the SPRAGUE-Dawley line, inclined to get cancer, even in ideal conditions, all the same neglect of the conclusions of statistical analysis (yes trifles, it is a matter of everyday life!).

One of the interesting questions in the evolutionary biology of mammals is how adaptation to life at high altitudes occurs. First of all, of course, they study people - the inhabitants of the highlands, but not only. In an electronic preprint of an article from Genome Research, a large group of Chinese scientists presented the results of sequencing the genomes of 60 dogs, including representatives of five breeds, living in Tibet at an altitude of 800 m to one and a half kilometers.

Marianna Verevkina. Self -portrait. 1910 The artist Marianna Verevkina (1860-1938) is not very famous for the general public, although in 2010, a jubilee exhibition was organized by the 110th anniversary of her birth in Tretyakov Gallery. For a long time I didn’t even hear the name Verevkina, and I learned about her in a very strange way.

An international team of astronomers, led by Roger Deane of the University of Cape Town (South Africa), managed to detect three supermassive black holes located extremely close to each other (two of them located just a few hundred light years from each other) . This unusual configuration, which arose in a pair of colliding galaxies, may help in the future to directly detect gravitational waves (publication in the journal Nature [1]).
