The epoch-making discovery was made by members of the international LIGO collaboration, uniting more than a thousand scientists from fifteen countries. This project was proposed in the 1980s by Kip Thorne, Ronald Drever and Rainer Weiss. The discovery of gravitational waves occurred almost exactly a hundred years after the publication of Albert Einstein's paper, which predicted their existence.

On February 11, 2016, at press conferences in the USA and Europe, the largest scientific achievement was simultaneously announced-the first direct registration of gravitational waves. The epoch -making opening was made by members of the Ligo International Collaboration, uniting more than a thousand scientists from fifteen countries.
