The Russian ruble fell on Wednesday, ignoring a firmer oil price, as markets reacted to a surge in fighting in eastern Ukraine and speculation that Russia may soon cut interest rates. At 11:15 a.m. in Moscow the ruble was down 1 percent against the dollar to trade at 65.86 and 1.1 percent weaker versus the euro at 76.17.

Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has launched a wave of checks on food prices at major supermarkets across the country, as racing inflation stokes fears that the government will impose price controls. A four-day sweep that began on Tuesday has already discovered price rises of 10 to 150 percent on basic foodstuffs, including meat, fish, milk and potatoes, the agency's spokeswoman Marina Gridneva told journalists on Wednesday, news agency TASS reported.

The two Russian Duma deputies made headlines last week after they reportedly went missing in the Antarctic. Two State Duma deputies who missed the parliament's opening session Tuesday have planted a Russian flag at the top of Mount Vinson, the highest peak in the Antarctic, one of them said Wednesday. Oleg Savchenko and Alexander Sidyakin's trip to the Antarctic made the headlines last week when they were feared missing after connection with them was lost.

Russian ministers presented President Vladimir Putin with a 1.375 trillion ruble ($21 billion) anti-crisis plan on Wednesday, including 250 billion rubles ($3.8 billion) from the National Wealth Fund to help recapitalize state banks. Russia's economy is sliding towards recession, hurt by a collapse in global oil prices, Western sanctions over the Ukraine crisis and a failure to address the country's long-term dependence on commodities exports.
