Pixabay In what has become a familiar trend of teachers berating students for supporting Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the deputy director of a school outside Moscow berated students for supporting Alexei Navalny. Once again, the students on the receiving end of the tirade recorded the incident and published the audio online.

On May 2, German Chancellor Angela Merkel made a stop-over in Sochi to talk to the Russian president about Ukraine and Syria. The following day, Turkish President Erdogan arrived to sort out Russia and Turkey’s tangled maneuvers in Syria. On May 10-11, Israeli and Palestinian leaders will consult with Putin, and a few days later Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte will arrive in Moscow.

03.05.2017Russian Oil Giant Rosneft Sues Oligarch's Rival Conglomerate
Russian state-owned oil giant Rosneft has filed suit against oligarch Vladimir Yevtushenkov's Sistema conglomerate, sending Sistema's stock prices into free fall. Rosneft is seeking 106.6 billion rubles ($1.87 billion) from Sistema in a case connected to Bashneft, a regional oil company and Rosneft subsidiary that previously belonged to the conglomerate.

Evgeny Feldman / AP A felony conviction against Alexei Navalny is now in force, effectively banning him from running for president for 15 years, though he says he isn’t stopping his presidential campaign. This February, following rulings by the European Court of Human Rights and the Russian Supreme Court to overturn an earlier case, Navalny was found guilty a second time of embezzling money from a lumber company in Kirov.

03.05.2017Russian State Duma Postpones Second Reading of Housing Demolition Bill
Moskva News Agency Vyacheslav Volodin, chair of Russia's State Duma, has ordered the second reading of the bill outlining Moscow's controversial renovation program to be postponed. The City Hall's renovation program could see 8,000 five-story buildings across the Russian capital demolished. The bill passed its first reading on April 20. Thelegislation allows Moscow authorities to declare entire districts “renovation zones,” where anybuilding could be torn down.

It's a rare occasion when a person can find remnants of the prehistoric world in his or her own backyard. But residents of eastern Moscow can do just that today. That's because someone — it's still unclear who — delivered the wrong kind of soil to Moscow's Izmaylovo district. Instead of black soil, the neighborhood got prehistoric clay containing the remains of molluscs from the Jurassic Period, the TASS news agency reported Wednesday.

For the past two years, the percentage of Russians who say they get their news from the TV has dropped 10 percent, as Russians who rely primarily on the Internet for news has grown by the same amount.

Vuikos / YouTube The Russian cartoon network “2x2” has decided not to air the latest episode of “The Simpsons,” following complaints by clergy in the Russian Orthodox Church, according to the news agency RBC. In the episode, titled “Looking for Mr. Goodbart,” Homer becomes obsessed with playing “Peekimon Get” (a play on Pokemon Go), and wanders into Sunday Church looking for “Peekimons,” as does Jeffrey "Comic Book Guy" Albertson.
