"X-Men" (premiere) . One of the most pretentious Hollywood projects in the comic book film genre. In addition, the director is the brilliant Brian Singer (“The Usual Suspects,” “Apt Pupil”). However, the film, if not outright unsuccessful, is overly drawn-out and unclear in its plot. Too many heroes. Unjustified pathos (you still don’t feel sorry for the mutants - everyone knows perfectly well that the authors of the film invented them, along with all the torment). Average soundtrack. Mostly mediocre actors. But cool special effects, fights, chases. A blue chameleon girl and two werewolves - good and evil. The overall lack of completion is somewhat confusing. But whether to hope for a continuation, or to hope that there will be no continuation, and that Singer will finally come to his senses, is unclear. ( Detailed review. )

"Asterix and Obelix against Caesar" (premiere) . The first and, despite all the obvious immaturity, quite a sweet and unexpected experience of the French in the field of comics in cinema. Claude Zidi once directed such classic comedies as "Razinya" or "Don't lose sight", and now he has turned Depardieu into a fat-bellied Viking, Christian Clavier into his partner, and Roberto Benigni remains the same as the buffoon. A comedy for preschool children - a kind of very high-quality “visiting a fairy tale.” Sometimes (very rarely) it’s funny, but mostly it’s just cute. ( Detailed review. )

"His Wife's Diary" (premiere) . A rare domestic film that, despite all its shortcomings, makes sense to go see. Alexei Uchitel has produced a strange work about the tangled relationship between the aging author of Dark Alleys , Nobel laureate Ivan Bunin, and his wife and mistress. Without excessive respect and excessive arrogance. A competent script plus good actors - Andrey Smirnov, Olga Budina, Evgeny Mironov. In general, it is a well-deserved winner of a few Russian film screenings, which is watched with respect even by guests from abroad. A trifle, but still nice.
"Roland" :
20.10-22.10 - 13:00, 17:30, 20:00.
"Invisible" . It is no coincidence that the Dutch, if they participate in such polls at all, name Paul Verhoeven as a candidate for the post of best film director in their country. Even though he has been an American for a long time. Still, not everyone can deliver so many super-grossing and cynical blockbusters in such different genres - “RoboCop”, and “Flesh and Blood”, and “Total Recall”, and “Basic Instinct”, and “Starship Troopers”... Eyes scatter. They say "The Invisible Man" is one of Verhoeven's most unsuccessful works. All lies. It’s just that in his cynicism, Paul this time reached a certain logical limit - the next villain is not visible throughout the entire film, visual effects play instead. And if there is no plot, why do we need a plot? But there is a super idea - it is dangerous to be a genius. Who should know about this if not Verhoeven himself. ( Detailed review. )

"Harry, a friend who wishes you well." New French cinema. The film is extremely cute, as is its main character, the friendly guy Harry. He infiltrates the family of Michel's school friend and in various ways - from friendly admonition to bribery and blackmail - forces him to become a brilliant writer. An ironic Hitchcockian phantasmagoria with excellent actors in the leading roles - Mathilde Seigner ( "Venus Beauty Salon" ), Sophie Guillemin ("Desire"), Sergi Lopez ("The Pornographic Liaison") and Laurent Luca ("Paula X"). Delicate schizophrenia in with flying monkeys. ( Detailed review. )

"Dancing in the Dark" The main film of the year, which even its opponents admit. It’s almost indecent to talk about him, everything has been said . Starring Icelander Björk (Cannes Palma for Best Actress), Frenchwoman Catherine Deneuve, Swede Peter Stormare. The action takes place in America, where the tragedy of a miserable single mother who came to the sunny States from communist Czechoslovakia unfolds. Her only salvation is her favorite musicals, which obscure the hateful reality in the most terrible moments... The magic of the image, multiplied by incredible music. The audience applauds and, as a rule, sobs. Alas, now only the dubbed version is shown in Moscow cinemas. ( Detailed review. )

A retrospective of Leo Carax will take place at the Cinema Museum in November! Follow the announcements!
"Boy Meets Girl" The first film by the French genius Leo Carax as part of a unique retrospective undertaken by the Museum of Cinema. 1984 An absolutely aesthetic, yet piercingly lyrical action. Carax's favorite actor, Denis Lavant, appears for the first time. Love remains failed, unfulfilled and, even more so, magical. Black and white shots of Paris, as if seen in a dream, sudden changes in intense emotions with floating visual hallucinations... Poetry embodied in cinema, one of the best European films of the 80s.
"Bad Blood" The second film by the French genius Leo Carax as part of a unique retrospective undertaken by the Museum of Cinema. 1986 Carax's most unusual film is, at the same time, the most classic, textbook one. The theme is the same as always - love. The main roles are the same Denis Lavant and Juliette Binoche, discovered by Carax, who is still very young. The plot is vague, crime-fiction, somewhat vaguely reminiscent of some unwritten story by the Strugatsky brothers. What is clear is that Binoche chose an unattractive old man over Laban (Lavan himself, for all his charisma, is oh so scary in person), and then everything ended badly.
"Lovers from the New Bridge" . The third film by the French genius Leo Carax as part of a unique retrospective undertaken by the Museum of Cinema. 1990 It was believed that after this film, having reached the top in it, Carax refused to make films. However, nine years later he himself denied this. The least metaphysical and most complete picture. Beloved are the same as before. This time, Laban is a strange homeless man living near the Pont Neuf, which is being renovated, and Binoche is a going blind artist. The romance between them seems to be impossible, but it still happens, and even in the finale there is a faint semblance of a happy ending. A lot of episodes that have gone down in the annals - for example, burning the "Wanted" notices in the Laban metro, jumping from a bridge onto a barge, etc.
"Pola X" . The latest film by the French genius Leo Carax as part of a unique retrospective undertaken by the Museum of Cinema. 1999 In Cannes, it seems, they simply did not understand him. A story of incest, love between son and mother, brother and sister. Perhaps the best role of the aging Catherine Deneuve, who finally decided to be naked in the movies. Guillaume Depardieu is tragic and mysterious. All this is a modernized remake of Herman Mellville's little-known novel "Paul, or Duality." The title "Pola X" is an abbreviation of the title of the novel plus the Roman numeral ten, that is, the tenth version of the script. A dark and foggy parable about creativity and passion.
