What lies hide (premiere). The latest work of the great American opportunist Robert Zemeckis, author of the trilogy "Back to the Future" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", after the phenomenal success of "Forrest Gump" which became another cinematic symbol of the nation. The follow-up film, Contact, a brooding story about spiritual communication with aliens, was considered less than successful by critics. The new Zemeckis is going with a bang. A slow psychological-mystical thriller with chilling details quite in the spirit of Hitchcock, it is entirely built on the acting work of the aging but still beautiful spouses played by Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. The latter now plays just such aged beauties (see “The Story of Us”), which suits her. The only problem is that the psychological-detective component does not quite fit in with the mystical one, but otherwise everything is in order. Without unnecessary pathos, firmly glued together. Good music in the old spirit, lots of details, close-ups, silent scenes. The ending is a bit disappointing... but what else can you expect from a film with such a meager number of characters? Blair Witch II: Book of Shadows (premiere). In Moscow, this notoriously scandalous film is shown earlier than in most of the world. Is it worth it? An undoubtedly interesting experiment, carried out by several students and graduates of the NN Film Institute somewhere in the States, was successful - viewers not only believed the absurd “documentary” story about three young filmmakers who were kidnapped by a forest witch, but were also seriously frightened by the screams, laughter and crying in forest. Like every successful horror film (even experimental and low-budget ones), The Blair Witch Project must have a sequel, and here it is, the long-awaited sequel. The director, screenwriter and actors are people who had nothing to do with the first film (while, oddly enough, The Witch 3 will again be directed by the original team), and are equally little known. As expected, the main focus is on “documentary”, and all the characters have the same names as the actors. However, today we cannot do without Marilyn Manson and special effects. This time, several Boston students decide to find the scene of the previous episode, the very house where seven children were killed, and then three heroes of “The Witch 1” disappeared. They spend the night at the house, and when they wake up they discover strange marks on their bodies and realize that they have lost their memory of the last few hours. When they return to the city, “something” returns with them... ( Detailed review .)

Cup (premiere) . A film that is interesting as a fact. However, if you just love movies and are completely indifferent to both Buddhism and football (this can happen!), then you may not like it. Almost the first film in the history of world cinema shot by natural Tibetan lamas. Honor and praise to them. About how the monks of one secluded monastery discover television and a wonderful foreign game - kicking a ball along the ground with their feet... In its meaninglessness, the intrigue is as natural as the game itself - football. Let's keep silent about Buddhism.

A story about us . One of the last roles (before The Nine Yards and after The Sixth Sense) of Bruce Willis, whose popularity has not diminished over the years. The film is purely an acting one, with Willis performing in a duet with Michelle Pfeiffer, who is also currently experiencing a kind of renaissance (see “What Lies Beneath” by Zemeckis). This is a classic, very high-quality melodrama about how one married couple spent fifteen years together. Many in the audience are crying with emotion (though we are talking about the American public). The director and co-star is Rob Reiner, widely known for his highly successful film adaptation of Stephen King ten years ago, Misery.
Libertine . French frivolous comedy, supposedly "costumeless". Quite a funny story from Diderot’s youth, about his confrontation with the church and the period of creation of the legendary Encyclopedia. Ladies and gentlemen indulge in fornication and free-thinking, despite any obstacles. During the breaks, they try to philosophize. Vincent Perez played Diderot well, and director Gabriel Aguillon, borrowing style and plot from Greenaway (see "The Draftsman's Contract"), successfully compiled a pleasant movie for the relaxation of middle-class intellectuals. By the way, a very high quality soundtrack. ( Detailed review )

Dinosaur . The new animated film from the Disney studio, a super-ambitious work of mass art, designed to break all the records achieved by Spielberg in Jurassic Park. Computer generated and extremely similar to real ones (although how do we know what they looked like, real ones...) dinosaurs are trying to escape from the universal catastrophe that predetermined their extinction. Sweetness - less than usual: natural naturalism. The plot is like Mowgli, how the iguanodon was nurtured by kind monkeys. The kids will love it.
Paula X. The latest film by the French genius Leos Carax as part of a unique retrospective undertaken by the Cinema Museum. 1999 In Cannes, it seems, they simply did not understand him. A story of incest, love between son and mother, brother and sister. Perhaps the best role of the aging Catherine Deneuve, who finally decided to be naked in the movies. Guillaume Depardieu is tragic and mysterious. In the role of a mystery woman, an unknown sister from somewhere in Yugoslavia, is the Russian actress Katerina Golubeva, whose terrible accent only helps her seem mysterious and unbearably beautiful. All this is a modernized remake of Herman Mellville's little-known novel "Paul, or Duality." The title "Pola X" is an abbreviation of the title of the novel plus the Roman numeral ten, i.e. tenth version of the script. A dark and foggy parable about creativity and passion. The scenes in which a mad avant-garde composer conducts a noise orchestra in the bowels of a semi-abandoned factory where the main characters have settled are worth a lot.

Passion for Andrey (Andrey Rublev). In our country, many people love Andrei Tarkovsky precisely for this film, the least European and almost exhaustive of the theme of the Russian national character. Transparent symbolism, a series of parables, between which several wandering painters wander, sometimes an icy, sometimes flaming spirit that emanates from the screen... A very strong and expressive movie with the enigmatic actor Solonitsyn in his best role. However, everyone is good there and every episode is priceless. You just have to look very carefully.

Dancing in the Dark . The main film of the year, which even its opponents admit. It’s almost indecent to talk about him, everything has been said. Starring Icelander Björk (Cannes Palm for Best Actress), Frenchwoman Catherine Deneuve, Swede Peter Stormare. The action takes place in America, where the tragedy of a miserable single mother who came to the sunny States from communist Czechoslovakia unfolds. Her only salvation is her favorite musicals, which obscure the hateful reality in the most terrible moments... The magic of the image multiplied by incredible music. The audience applauds and, as a rule, sobs. Alas, now only the dubbed version is shown in Moscow cinemas. ( Detailed review )
Lie. Surprisingly, but true: a 100% non-commercial South Korean soft-porn film is shown in Moscow, for a long time and every day. True, in the only cinema and only at night, but so what? “Lie” is the Korean version of “Lolita”, the love of a forty-year-old sculptor and an 18-year-old schoolgirl (according to Korean standards, a minor), and the love is harmonious, although short-lived... Developing in a completely conventional scenery, sado-maso, expressed in beating each other with sticks and whips on bare asses, it looks comical and strange, but the spectacle does not let the viewer go until the end. In Venice the film was praised, but at home it was banned. Which the director seems to have achieved on purpose. What the actual lie is remains outside the scope of the plot. ( Detailed review )
