On March 5, 2008, the Pravoberezhny District Court of the city of Beslan began preliminary hearings on the case of extremism, which was discovered in one of the statements of the "Voice of Beslan", published three years ago.
Recall that we are talking about an appeal to the President and Congress of the United States, members of the EU and the European Parliament entitled "To all who sympathize with the victims of the Beslan terrorist attack!" In our opinion, none of the statements in this appeal falls under the definition of extremist activity.
Let us note the difficult legal collision that has developed in this case. The actual authors of this appeal, who in February 2008 were removed from the organization by the decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Court of North Ossetia-Alania and, left without a legal entity, continued their activities under the new name of the All-Russian Public Organization of Victims of Terrorist Acts "Voice of Beslan", are not defendants for case. The defendant in the case is the NGO "Voice of Beslan" and Marina Melikova, to whom this organization is now registered.
According to Ella Kesaeva, co-chair of the All-Russian NGO "Voice of Beslan", they petitioned to also be brought to trial as defendants. At a meeting on March 6, this petition was rejected, which means that the authors of the material, who are ready to actively defend themselves against accusations of extremism, will not take part in the trial.
