The SOVA Center presented two annual reports

On March 18, 2010, the SOVA Center held a presentation at the Independent Press Center of two annual reports on the events of 2009, “Illegal application of anti-extremist legislation” and “Problems of implementing freedom of conscience.”

The director of the SOVA Center, Alexander Verkhovsky, and an employee of the Institute of Human Rights, Elena Ryabinina, spoke at the press conference.

The report on freedom of conscience examined the most pressing problems that arose or received new developments in this area in 2009. In particular, the topic of discrimination against religious minorities, manifestations of religious xenophobia, and teaching knowledge about religion at school was touched upon.

The report on “unlawful extremism” focused on explaining the position of the SOVA Center in relation to “anti-extremism”, the expanding campaign to restrict freedom of conscience using anti-extremist tools, various forms of abuse of countering xenophobia, incl. abuse of the concept of "social group".

The report "Problems of implementing freedom of conscience" was published in the section "Religion in a secular society." The report “Illegal application of anti-extremist legislation”was published in the “Our Publications” section.

Elena Ryabinina presented an overview of the repression against independent Muslims in Russia, “Forced Radicalization.”

Then the speakers answered questions from the audience.
