The military court of appeal reduced Yulia Boyarshinov's sentence by three months - to five years and three months - in the case of participation in a “terrorist community” (Part 2 of Article 205.4 of the Criminal Code); the sentence of another defendant, Viktor Filinkov, was upheld. Both were detained in St. Petersburg and placed in a pre-trial detention center in January 2018; Boyarshinov was initially accused of illegal possession of explosives, but a few months later, in April 2018, he was also accused of participating in a terrorist community.

Viktor Filinkov was the first of the accused in the “Penza case” to report torture by security forces. According to him, on the day of his arrest, FSB officers took him to the forest, tortured him with electric shocks and beat him. The criminal case against the “terrorist community “Network”” was opened by the FSB in October 2017. One of the defendants in the case, anti-fascist Igor Shishkin, received 3.5 years in prison. He fully admitted his guilt, signed an agreement to cooperate with the investigation and testified against the other defendants. The case against another defendant, Yegor Zorin, was dropped in September 2018. He also testified against other defendants, after which he was released under house arrest.
