This release of the OZ journal provides a wide range of views on the subject of linguistics under the general title Society in the Mirror of the Language, presenting an analysis of changes in the Russian language in the last two decades. The changes have taken effect not only in the language’s structure and lexicon, but also in its verbal behavior, and — even more broadly — in the speech environment that we all exist in.

Tired of being a linguist I could not understand why this article was given to me with such difficulty. It would seem that for about ten years I have been regularly writing about the current state of the Russian language, speaking, as it were softer to say, from the perspective of an enlightened linguist [1] .

The last ten years in Russia has been trying to strengthen its influence on the Russian language, or, more rigidly, to restore control over it that existed in the Soviet years. This control was practically lost along with the disappearance, or at least a change in the status of professions such as a censor, editor, corrector and announcer. The government, in particular, affects the language through laws and through the creation of various tips and federal programs.

In order to understand what happens to language in eras of historical cataclysms, we need to consider it not as an abstract system (which is what linguists usually study), but rather as a social tool. The social functioning of language in modern times determines the division of its elements (phonetic, morphological, syntactic and lexical) into standard and substandard.
