“The girls who write to us make excuses for being raped.” How female human rights defenders save women in the North Caucasus
Last fall, four sisters from Dagestan escaped from domestic violence but were later apprehended on the border with Georgia. The women were eventually released due to the efforts of volunteers and human rights advocates from Marem, a group that assists women in fleeing abusive situations. One of the sisters, who had fled, has recently returned, surprising everyone.
