Taurus (premiere) . This is the only Russian film presented in the competition program of the Cannes Film Festival -2001: the situation of two years ago is repeated, only instead of “Moloch”, a film about one weekend from the life of Hitler, Sokurov is taking the penetrating narrative about days from the life of Lenin - a patient, an old retired leader of the revolution - in the hits. The rest of the components are approximately the same: screenwriter Yuri Arabov (by the way he was given a Cannes prize for the script in the 99th), Hameleon artist Leonid Mozgova ... The operator is only new, named Alexander Sokurov. The director himself took up the camera, and it turned out unexpectedly well; The rest of the "Taurus" is closer to the traditional Sokurov than "Moloch" - slow, leisurely, meditative, thoughtful and undoubtedly beautiful. 13 days (premiere) . In America, such films are very fond of, with us, where history has always turned on a movie screen into a myth, they are hardly possible in principle, the more interesting the reaction of the Russian public. This is almost a documentary story - the participants in the events saw and approved (sic!) - about the thirteen days of the Caribbean crisis, seen by the eyes of Kevin Costner, the trustee and assistant President Kennedy. Costner is serious and completely unbridle, the characters surrounding his characters are believable - such a scrupulous reconstruction of events, in theory, should be accompanied by the equally thorough reconstruction of the emotions of people who are ready for the quite real Apocalypse of NOW, but the film is too cold. And therefore it is quite mound. Although those who survived this themselves learned to hide in a bomb shelter and put on a gas mask, perhaps “13 days” will cause some living feelings.

Finally, our directors, in this case, Mikhail Ptashuk, did not take up the imitation of Hollywood genres, but for the imputal Soviet solid genre of military drama. “In August of the 44th”, it was based on the most famous novel by Vladimir Bogomolov, the writer, most famous in the world of cinema, at least the story “Ivan”, according to which Tarkovsky put his first film. However, Ptashuk did not like the Bogomolov film. Nikki, the younger devil (premiere) . Another dumb and impudent American comedy. Humor, to put it mildly, is not the highest damage. The theme is slippery - about the devil and his sons. Three sons, the youngest - the most stupid - becomes the main character of an uncomplicated story about the highest and lower. Special effects are very high quality, at times witty. However, the main thing here is the actors; This refers not to a weak and rude comedian Adam Sandler, who played the main role, but the impressive Harvey Katel, his former ward, who unexpectedly emerged from the shadow of Quentin Tarantino (he again, as in the old days, played a small and ridiculous role of a blind preacher), as well as Muse Tarantino and Lych - Patricia Arquette. In general, if there is nothing , then at least there is someone to look at.

Heartbreak (premiere) . Another American comedy, no longer childish, but for middle age, for couples and businessmen (the penultimate comedy of this kind in the Russian rental - "what women want"). The idea of the traditional plot of the Plutovsky novel is combined here with the indisputable professionalism of the actors, as a result, a completely acceptable genre cinema is obtained, without overlaps and vulgarities. The elderly Jin Hackman plays a comic playboy aged, and the main roles - mother and daughter, seducing men and then pulling money from them - performed magnificent Jennifer Love Hughitt and Sigurni Weaver.

Ridley Scott, who, thanks to the “gladiator”, the main character of Oscar-2001 (although the director’s reward, thank God, did not receive), and once made very good films-from the basics of the Sins-Fixes “Running Blade” and “Alien” to the feminist “Telma and Louise”, put the sequel of the “Lumber”, one of the Few thrillers perceived by critics seriously. Dr. Hannibal Lecter continues to eat people, and Clarissa Stanling's agent enters into a fight (still hopeless) with evil. Julianna Moore and Anthony Hopkins are at least promising, although many moviegoers believe that after Hopkins, Hopkins did not have a single worthy acting work. Including the "silence of the lamb."

Save Grace! (premiere) . English comedy in English phlegmatic-ironic spirit, deserved a prize of spectator sympathies on the last Sandens. In the title role, the titled elderly lady of Brend Bletin ("Voice", "Secrets and Lies"). The plot is the story of a lady who, after her husband’s death, remained in poverty and decided to grow marijuana in her garden. Since we have a comedy, the Grace project finds support from her friends - the village old women and a local priest - and the planned happy ending is waiting for the viewer.

Requiem for a dream (premiere) . The decision to release such a film in a wide rental is a brave solution. The second picture of the talented director from the latest generation of American independent (the directorial prize for Pi in Sandens) Darren Aronofsky does not apply to art house only because her pathos, ultimately, is quite journalistic and does not contradict the official state pathos. Simply put, "no drugs." Otherwise, this is a virtuoso sample of claustrophobic depressive cinema, built on transparent and to tears of beautiful symbols, erecting the idea of the drug to the highest principle of life of the layman. Installation and especially the music (the performance of Kronos-Quartet) is above all praise, the acting work Ellen Berstin ("Exit to the Devil", "Alice does not live here") is not truely good. "To be John Malkovich." One of the best films last year only now, after several shows at the summer Moscow festival, is released in a wide Russian rental. Better late than never. A completely reformal picture, reminiscent of the absurd structure and a specific humor except perhaps the sketches of Monti Pieton and the play of Vvedensky or Harms. In short, the fact is that several frostbitten losers (including playing street puppeteer John Kusak and his "wife" - Cameron Diaz, who was crazy on pets) find a loophole in the head of actor John Malkovich. Malkovich himself had enough taste and common sense so as not to miss the role of his whole life. The debutant Spike Jones (the well -known virtuoso video clip Bjork It's OH So Quiet , who inspired von Trier on the “dancing in the dark” ) received a lot of nominations for Oscar, which, thank God, did not turn into anything. Ilya Muromets . Remastated and restored, to the envy of overseas show businessmen and movie houses, the Soviet film of the 56th year gained a new screen life on Fuji film and in the sound of Dolbi. Alexander Ptushko, in the 30s-the avant-garde and the Westernik, the author of the New Gulliver and the Golden Key, after the war passed to the patriotic-national epics ("Sadko" and "Ilya Muromets"), removed with abnormal scope.
