The New Times continues to follow the fate of a man who has been diagnosed with a fatal diagnosis*

Last week I was in what is called a medically induced coma. But as you can see, now I'm writing the column again. The septic syndrome itself is not associated with cancer, but it loves people with a weakened immune system. That is, people like me: after another course of toxic chemotherapy and radiation (and this is necessary as a stage in preparation for transplantation), my blood is like water, there was no oxygen in it at all, and immunity was below the lower limit. This was used by the bacterium, which, like a plague, went through the body. The trouble is that the probability of correctly diagnosing a septic syndrome and successfully curing its consequences is lower than for cancer. As a result of the development of the disease, all body systems in a row begin to fail. But here I was terribly lucky: at the moment when my brains refused to think, my wife Masha was nearby. Using her legal right, she began to make decisions on the admission of specialists, based on the key idea that we are in the best hospital in New York.
I really like this system in which such a guardian is appointed over the sick. Because if it were not for my wife, I would not have been able to make rational and correct decisions. Then, for a week, I was in a medically induced coma, after which I woke up at the moment when the doctors had already stopped trying to give advice on finding a priest of a suitable denomination.
What did I dream about this week? Interesting colorful stories, allusions to Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. And then a woman in a red dress appeared, who connected both worlds and brought me to consciousness. It was my favorite Masha. Now my liver is working again, I can talk again, my lungs and heart are working, my kidneys are resisting a little. I still can’t even take a step, so in a week, it turns out, muscles can degrade. But doctors plan to restore all this in about a week.
All last week I was in the best department of the best hospital in New York, perhaps one of the few institutions where a person in such a situation could really be saved. Now I have already been transferred to a regular department and the number of tubes sticking out from everywhere has greatly decreased. I am here thanks to the funds that were collected by friends from all over the world. It just so happened that during this time I tried to be a non-walker, dumb, blind. Now I understand more about how to help such people, so I again return to work on a book about cities, which we conceived with the City Projects.
In parallel with the same course, but with a slight delay, the process of preparing for bone marrow transplantation will proceed. There are three weeks of radiation therapy ahead, then a check of the results on CT and PET, and then the operation. Now I need to find the so-called "clean housing", that is, an apartment where the chance of picking up a bacterium will be minimal, and at the same time this housing should be close to the hospital. I will probably be discharged in a week, and then I will have to come to the hospital three or four times a week.
You will read this forty-second column of mine in The New Times the day I turn 30. The probability of surviving to this anniversary was minimal. I am a happy person: I have a wonderful wife and tens of thousands of friends who have helped and continue to help me fight this cancer. So thank you very much to all my friends. The road will be mastered by the walking one!
