The transplantation was finally carried out: it happened on January 15th. All kinds of life support devices, which were brought to my clean box just in case, were not required: the procedure went without side effects. Now the fun begins: within one to two weeks, the donor's bone marrow will either engraft or not. At this time, I will not have any immunity at all, so all viruses, bacteria and fungi are mine. When I was transplanted my own cells in Samara, the cellular material did not take root in me for a very long time. Now everything will depend on my sister's bone marrow: there is hope that it will be easier. But two intense weeks are promised by the doctors anyway. On the third day after the transplant, everything hurts: obviously, the viruses have already settled where they could. I can hardly eat only liquid - I constantly feel sick. I try to sleep. If the pain becomes unbearable, they will inject me, but I wouldn’t want to: I really don’t like all these narcotic drugs. And simpler tablets can obscure the temperature, which is a sign of a problem - also not good. In the process of this, I continue to receive all kinds of medications aimed at the proper engraftment of the donor material. The next week and a half, everything will only go downhill - the doctors warned. Yes, I understand myself. But if you have already dived, now it remains only to swim across.
When I'm not sleeping, I go over the previous days in my head. A catheter in the neck is a whole micro-operation here. My sister was also put in the neck - and he greatly interfered with her. But my sister survived, special drugs literally flooded her bone marrow with white and stem cells - now I have it all. The website aviasales.ru gave my mother and sister tickets to Voronezh. My beloved Masha remains with me. I also remember how surprised everyone here is that it was not the Russian state that sent me to the Columbia clinic for treatment, but myself and the people who read my blog and raised money. A significant proportion of international patients here are people for whom the treatments in their countries have been exhausted and for whom their government has paid for treatment in the United States. And I have to explain that in Russia it is not customary to trust your fate to the government ... “We have other traditions in our country,” I said to the nurse, stunned by this phrase.
And I tell the story of raising funds for my treatment, a story about thousands of friends in Russia and all over the world. About how, within just a week, ordinary people raised the first funds that allowed them to fly to the USA. This produces a stunning effect. And probably, it may seem that all my confidence and lack of worries are explained by thick skin, hardened by twenty courses of chemotherapy, hardened by resuscitation and sepsis ... But in fact, this calmness comes from this very Russian tradition, in which it is customary to both count and lean on yourself and those who are willing to lend a helping hand. And I say to the nurse: “You see, we have simply magnificent people living in Russia.”
