1947 Declaration of Independence of India and Pakistan
70 years ago, on August 15, 1947, the independence of India and Pakistan was proclaimed. Pakistan became a new British dominion and a new member of the UN, while India inherited its dominion status and seat in the UN from British India. During the division of the latter into India and Pakistan, about half a million people became victims of interreligious clashes, and 12 million people became refugees, having moved from India to Pakistan or from Pakistan to India.
