“They think we're prey”: the progress and evidence of Iranian protests in which at least 5,000 people died
News The Insider January 19, 2026 On January 17, new figures emerged on the death toll from Iran's protests, and 26-year-old Iranian Erfan Soltani, the first protester sentenced to death, was allowed to see his family. After the execution date was postponed, and a number of media reported that Erfan was killed in prison, his relatives were not sure that he was alive. Meanwhile, the Iranians are looking for the dead - in morgues, hospitals, among photographs of unidentified bodies.
